What Is a Lip Lift?

Elongation of the upper lip occurs with age. This feature contributes to an aged appearance and can be bothersome to many individuals. A lip lift excises a small amount of skin from the upper lip immediately below the nose. Sometimes additional skin is removed through small incisions at the corners of the mouth. The incisions are hidden in the curvature at the base of the nose, and sometimes along the lateral lip, and typically heal to a scar that is nearly imperceptible. After the procedure, the upper lip is shortened and the red lip is unfurled, so that the red portion of the lip appears fuller.

Dr. Namin’s Philosophy

The lip lift is an excellent procedure, particularly when performed alongside a facelift and other procedures aimed at rejuvenating the face, as it helps provide a more balanced result across the entire face. Lip lifts have also become very popular among younger individuals and among those who have received lip filler treatments for many years.

Anticipated Postoperative Recovery

Recovery after a lip lift is typically straightforward and easy. The incision will be slightly red for the first week and then fades quickly. There is usually little bruising or swelling. It is important to avoid pulling down on the lip during recovery to prevent tension on the incision. The sutures are removed between days 3 and 5.

Anticipated Postoperative Timeline

Day of Surgery. If the lip lift is performed as a stand-alone procedure, it can often be done under local anesthesia.

Post-Operative Days 3-5. You will return to clinic for suture removal.

Post-Operative Weeks 1-2. Redness of the incision fades.

Post-Operative Week 2. Light exercise may be resumed.

Post-Operative Week 4. Vigorous exercise may be resumed.
