What Is a Chin Augmentation?

A chin augmentation increases the projection of the chin through the placement of a silicone implant. A small incision is made beneath the chin, and the soft tissue is gently elevated off the chin bone. The implant is then positioned directly over the jawbone and secured in place with sutures.

Dr. Namin’s Philosophy

A small chin, known as microgenia, must be distinguished from retrognathia and other disorders of the jaw that involve an improper bite, or occlusal, relationship. In patients with a normal bite, the appearance of a small chin can be significantly improved with the placement of an implant. This procedure is often performed in combination with rhinoplasty or a neck lift, since a well-balanced chin complements the nose and helps define the jawline and neck.

Anticipated Postoperative Recovery

There is typically minimal external bruising or swelling after this procedure. The sutures are left in place for about one week. The incision is hidden beneath the chin, though it may be noticeable during the first two to three weeks. Because the lower lip muscles are elevated off the jaw during surgery, the lower lip will feel different for the first few weeks; this sensation resolves on its own as healing progresses.

Anticipated Postoperative Timeline

Post-Operative Day 7. Dr. Namin will see you in clinic for suture removal.

Post-Operative Week 1. Light exercise may be resumed.

Post-Operative Week 3. Vigorous exercise may be resumed.

Post-Operative Weeks 2-4. The incision fades and becomes less noticeable.
